This album is a bit old now, as Da Truth has recently released his second album called ‘The Faith’. The reason I wanted to write a review about ‘Moment of Truth’ is because I think it is definitely worth mentioning. It was a very fresh album for me. It came out at a time when I was feeling like Gospel hip-hop was in a bit of a lull.
From the outset Da truth delivers his thoughts with an intense, passionate and very distinctive flow, which continues through the album. He starts the album with an acapella going in to an upbeat track called ‘This is for you’. The album then proceeds to hit the listener with about 5 bangers in a row, with some hot production and tight lyrical flows.
I think it is important for solo artists to keep their album varied otherwise you often get bored of the same voice. Truth does this well selecting some heavy artists to join him including, another Philly rapper called J Silas and a singer and producer called JR whose album I would love to hear. There are also features from fellow label mates Cross Movement and St. Louis rapper Flame.
Having said all that, I would say that Da Truth seems very much focussed on encouraging and challenging the Christian believer rather than reaching the unbeliever. I say this because although many of his lyrics present the truth of the gospel, many of his track concepts are concepts that I think would be better grasped by Christians. I would also say that the album lacks a bit in the concept department but then maybe that is because he is trying to drive a predominant message home.
All in all though, ‘Moment of Truth, is a well crafted album and delivers a solid message with hot beats, tight flows, heavy lyrics and will be bumping in my CD player for a long time to come.
